AJAX NOT THE ONLY THREAT

The Belgium international Dries Mertens has said that PSV will be making a big mistake if they think that Ajax are the only contenders for the Eredivisie title this season. Mertens thinks that Feyenoord’s chances of winning the title should not be discounted.

PSV are currently top of the Dutch Eredivisie table. They are ahead of both Ajax and Feyenoord, but Ajax are the closest in the second position. Feyenoord are not too distant, as they are in the third position – just one point behind Ajax. The media has been entirely focusing on Ajax as the main title contender for PSV.

The 25-year-old Mertens has been one of the impressive players for PSV this season. He has managed to plunder 12 goals in just 22 appearances for the team, as they have built a two-point advantage over Ajax in the table. The club has been an excellent run of form in recent weeks, as they have lost just one match in the last five encounters, with their form being so good that Unibet have offered odds on them matching Premier League leaders Manchester United point-for-point.

Mertens has said that it is extremely important that they maintain the good run of form over the next few difficult matches as well. Mertens has also praised the youngsters Memphis Depay and Jurgen Locadia by saying that they have made a lot of progress.

“Ajax won an important game [against Twente] on Saturday, so they did well. Ajax are not the only contenders, though. We have to keep a close eye on Feyenoord as well. It’s crucial for us to keep on winning the next few games. We already struggled against the so-called smaller teams before, but those games are as important as the matches versus AZ, Twente and Ajax toward the end of the season. They are developing really well, especially when you see how many goals they score and how important they are,” said Mertens.
